Generalist careers can work but struggle to generate the 'when X comes up, ask this person' top-of-mind reputation that drives high-value opportunities. Building specific reputation in one area first — even if you broaden later — creates the foundation.
What this looks like
Pick one specific area within your function. Write, speak, build relationships in that area for 2-3 years. Become the obvious answer when that topic comes up. Subsequent broadening builds on the foundation.
Resume reading 'expert in X' gets called for opportunities that 'generalist in Y' never sees. The specialty doesn't trap you; it opens doors.
